What to put in the first message
- Who the subject is, and whether they are living.
- Roughly what you already have — photographs, letters, recordings, a tree, or nothing yet.
- Any date you are working towards.
- Whether this is for a family, a church, a society or an institution.
Four lines is plenty. You do not need to have it organised; working out what is there is part of the work.
If there is not much time
Say urgent and explain what is happening. I answer the same day and tell you plainly what can be done in the time there is.
What happens next
- I reply within one working day — the same day if you said urgent.
- We talk first. No charge, no quotation beforehand, no pressure.
- If it is a fit, I normally send a written quotation within 24 hours with scope, timeline and a fixed price.
